Quercus robur belongs to a very large family of trees, with around
600 species. Oak is heavy, strong and hard, and extremely durable.



The trees can be very old, up to a thousand years old.
Traditionally, oak is used for shipbuilding and underwater
structures.



Oak used to be used in huge quantities in shipbuilding. Up to 2,000
fine oak trees could be felled to build a single ship.
